Posthypnotic Cues: How Self-Hypnosis Continues to Help You After Trance
One of the most useful aspects of self-hypnosis is something called posthypnotic suggestion. A posthypnotic suggestion is an instruction given to yourself while in a hypnotic state, designed to influence your thoughts, feelings, or behaviour later — after the hypnosis session has ended.
In simple words, it is a mental cue that helps bring back a desired feeling or response in daily life.
For example, imagine Joan at work. Whenever she feels tense or stressed, she simply looks at the clock on the wall. This small action reminds her of a clock spring slowly unwinding. During self-hypnosis, she had connected this image with releasing tension from her own body and mind.
As a result, the moment she sees the clock, her mind naturally recalls that calm state. The posthypnotic cue helps her relax, reducing stress and bringing back the same peaceful feeling she experienced during self-hypnosis.
Posthypnotic cues can also be helpful for improving sleep.
Take Jerry’s example. He struggled to fall asleep at night. During self-hypnosis, he repeatedly suggested to himself that whenever he switched off the room light and yawned, he would begin to feel sleepy and relaxed.
In the beginning, Jerry consciously remembered to use these cues. He continued reinforcing the suggestion regularly during his self-hypnosis practice. Gradually, his sleep improved, and over time, he began falling asleep naturally soon after going to bed.
The important thing to understand is that posthypnotic cues work through repetition and association. Your mind begins linking a simple action, image, or behaviour with a desired emotional or physical response. With regular practice, these cues can become powerful tools for relaxation, better sleep, confidence, or breaking unwanted habits.
Self-hypnosis is not only about what happens during trance — it is also about how those positive suggestions continue supporting you in everyday life.
