๐พ Why Are Google and Amazon Interested in Indian Rice Fields? The Surprising Business of Methane and Carbon Credits
When we think of Google and Amazon, we think of AI, cloud computing, and massive data centres.
But here’s something interesting: their climate strategies are also creating opportunities in Indian rice fields.
As technology companies expand their AI infrastructure, managing their environmental footprint becomes increasingly important.
And one unexpected part of the solution? Indian farmers. ๐ฎ๐ณ
๐ฐ Google and Amazon are putting money behind agricultural climate solutions.
๐น Google: In September 2026, Google announced an agreement to purchase 1 million carbon credits from Indian climate-tech startup Mitti Labs. The project aims to help rice farmers reduce methane emissions across approximately 100,000 hectares of farmland.
๐น Amazon: In April 2026, Amazon signed an agreement with The Good Rice Alliance to purchase more than 685,000 tonnes of carbon credits, supporting methane-reduction practices among Indian rice farmers.

๐ฑ But how can a rice field generate carbon credits?
Traditional rice cultivation often involves keeping fields flooded. When the soil lacks oxygen, microorganisms produce methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
The solution is a practice called Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD).
Instead of keeping fields continuously flooded, farmers periodically allow the water level to drop before irrigating again.
This can reduce methane emissions and save irrigation water.
When emissions reductions are measured and verified under an appropriate carbon-credit programme, they can generate credits that companies purchase to support their climate goals.
๐ What does this mean for India?
โข Farmers can receive financial incentives for adopting climate-friendly practices.
โข Climate-tech startups can build businesses around measuring and reducing agricultural emissions.
โข Companies can help finance emissions-reduction projects beyond their own operations.
โข Indiaโs agricultural sector can become an important player in the emerging carbon market.
