“Trapped” is a tense short thriller that explores power, dignity, and social inequality through the story of a high school janitor caught in a dangerous situation.
The narrative follows a janitor working the night shift at a prestigious high school, accompanied by his young child. During a routine evening, he is on a call with his wife, discussing childcare arrangements, when he hears suspicious noises coming from the school gymnasium. Upon investigation, he discovers a group of elite students drinking and conspiring to execute a reckless and potentially harmful prank.
Their plan involves spreading sharp objects across the gym floor to injure unsuspecting students the following day for amusement. When janitor confronts them, the students attempt to bribe him into silence. However, they simultaneously mock and belittle him in front of his child, deeply wounding his sense of dignity. Despite his discomfort, Joaquin initially withdraws, choosing not to escalate the situation and taught he will teach them a lesson by locking elite students inside gymnasium.
The power imbalance soon becomes evident. Due to the students’ influential backgrounds—their parents being key figures in the school’s administration— janitor is later instructed by higher authorities to check on the situation in the gym. When he complies, the students manipulate the situation, demanding an apology and ultimately trapping him inside the gym by locking the doors and throwing the key onto the hazardous floor.
Now confined with his child in a room filled with dangerous obstacles, Joaquin is forced to navigate the perilous environment carefully. Demonstrating courage and resourcefulness, he manages to retrieve the key and secure their safety.
In the aftermath, school authorities arrive and recognize the severity of the situation. However, rather than holding the students accountable, the burden of resolving the crisis falls on Janitor. With no real power to challenge the system, he is compelled to accept responsibility and clean the gym late into the night.
“Trapped” ultimately highlights the harsh realities of social hierarchy, where authority and privilege overshadow fairness, leaving the powerless to endure both physical and emotional consequences.
